Protect Yourself from Losing FEHB Eligibility in Retirement

Generally, retirees whose FEHB eligibility ends are ineligible to re-enroll in the program. As a result, extra caution must be exercised when, for instance, you’re giving up FEHB coverage to be insured under a spouse’s health insurance elsewhere.

Eligibility will also end if a disabled retiree recovers or restores earning capability. Then, your enrollment ends on the last day of the month, in which you’re entitled to an annuity. However, your coverage will be extended for another 31 days at no cost to you.

You’ll keep your health benefits coverage if you’re eligible to apply for an immediate annuity, which begins after your disability annuity ends. You’ll receive detailed information about your right to do so if your disability annuity stops.

Suppose you’re under 60, and your disability annuity is reinstated due to a loss of earning capability or a recurrence of the disability for which you retired. In that case, you’ll get the option of having your health benefits coverage reinstated if you were enrolled when your disability annuity ended. You cannot continue your health benefits coverage as a retiree if you are solely eligible for a deferred annuity once your disability annuity stops.

Under specific conditions, your annuity will also end if you’re reemployed in the federal government. If this happens, your health benefits enrollment will get transferred to your new employer. If you’re reemployed in this manner, you must promptly tell OPM at P.O. Box 45, Boyers, PA 16017-0045. Ensure to include your retirement claim number (CSA number) and, if available, a copy of the personnel document demonstrating your appointment and your employing agency’s full name and address.
